So that’s it. Twelve hybrids and one ultra-high-mileage ’streetcart.’

All thirteen are legal on U.S. roads, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Which to choose? You’ll first have to pick a car type, based upon your preferences. We will then drill down further to your perfect ride once you’ve chosen.

On top of your choice in vehicle style and arrangement, you probably already have an idea of what amount of amount savings you’re willing to accept in exchange for the higher price tag associated with a hybrid car.

You’ve probably heard claims of the Toyota Prius or the Honda Insights’ excellent 60 miles per gallon fuel economy, or something similar, which is what lead you into your search for a hybrid car. Anyone with basic math skills can figure out just by hearing that number that if their car, with its’ 12-gallon tank got that sort of mileage, then stopping at the gas station once a week or more would be a bad memory, happily forgotten.

The truth is, although the 60 MPG rating is technically achievable, it only happens under the most ideal conditions. More often people report MPG savings in the 50-55 range for the Prius or Insight, and only then when the live in the city and don’t use the highway systems very often.
